What a NIF is

The number that unlocks Portugal.

Your NIF is a permanent, nine-digit Portuguese tax identification number issued by the tax authority (Finanças). It stays with you for life and is the single prerequisite behind almost everything official in Portugal, you're asked for it before you can bank, rent, buy or trade.

🏦

Open a bank account

A Portuguese bank account requires a NIF, the first thing most people need it for.

🔑

Rent or buy a home

Sign a rental contract or buy property in your name.

🏢

Start a company

Every owner needs a NIF before a Portuguese company can be formed.

📱

Everyday contracts

Phone, utilities, insurance and other services all ask for your NIF.

Two speeds

Choose your pace.

One fixed fee, confirmed in your quote before you pay. Both include fiscal representation where it's required for non-residents.

A common misconception

A NIF is not tax residency.

📌

Getting a NIF does not make you a Portuguese tax resident

This is the point people most often get wrong. A NIF is simply a tax identification number, a great many non-residents hold one purely to bank, invest or buy property in Portugal. Your tax residency is a separate question, determined by where you actually live (broadly, spending 183+ days a year in Portugal or having your habitual home there), not by holding a NIF. If your tax address is outside the EU/EEA, you'll need a fiscal representative to obtain and hold the NIF, which we provide. We confirm exactly what applies to your situation before any work begins.

How it works

From documents to tax number.

1
Step 1 · Your details

Send your documents

Choose Standard or Express, then upload a passport or national ID and a recent proof of address through a secure form.

2
Step 2 · Representation

We prepare your representation

We draw up a simple power of attorney so we can act for you at Finanças, and, for non-EU residents, provide the required fiscal representative.

3
Step 3 · Filing

We register with the tax office

Your NIF is requested directly with the Portuguese tax authority (Portal das Finanças) by our team.

4
Step 4 · Delivered

You receive your NIF

Your official tax number is issued and sent to you as a Finanças document, ready to open a bank account, sign a lease or start a company.

What you'll need

Usually just two things.

A clear copy of your passport or national ID
Proof of address from your home country (utility bill or bank statement, under 3 months old)
For non-EU/EEA residents: a short power of attorney for fiscal representation, we prepare it for you

That's usually everything. Once you send your request, we confirm exactly what's needed for your situation and collect it through a secure, encrypted upload. No loose email attachments.

FAQ

Good questions, answered.

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's tax identification number. You need it to open a bank account, sign a lease, buy property, get a phone or utility contract, work or freelance, and to set up a company.
No, a NIF is only a tax identification number. It does not, by itself, make you a tax resident of Portugal. Tax residency is a separate matter, determined by where you actually live (broadly, 183+ days a year in Portugal or having your habitual home there). Many non-residents hold a NIF purely to bank, invest or buy.
Yes, we arrange it 100% remotely from your passport and proof of address, including fiscal representation where required for non-residents. You never need to travel.
If your tax address is outside the EU/EEA, a fiscal representative is required to obtain and hold a NIF. We provide compliant fiscal representation as part of the service, so your application is accepted.
Standard (€1,150) is the normal route, typically 2–10 business days. Express (€1,550) prioritises your file for the fastest possible turnaround, typically 1–5 business days, ideal when a bank or landlord is waiting.
Your NIF is issued by Finanças and sent to you as an official document. It's a permanent number that stays with you for life and doesn't expire, though if your circumstances change (for example you become resident) the representation arrangement may need updating.

Carreh assists with the preparation and submission of NIF applications and arranges fiscal representation where required. The NIF itself is issued by the Portuguese tax authority (Finanças); our fee covers the remote handling and representation. Fees are confirmed in your quote before you pay.
