Last updated: March 2026 · Carreh Travel & Relocation Services
Carreh provides professional assistance to individuals seeking to obtain a Portuguese Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) — Portugal's taxpayer identification number. Our service covers non-residents applying remotely through a fiscal representative (representante fiscal), as required by Portuguese law. By submitting an application, you agree to the following terms unconditionally.
1Service Description
Carreh acts as an intermediary between the client and qualified Portuguese legal professionals (lawyers or certified fiscal agents). Our service includes:
- Review and preparation of your NIF application file
- Appointment and formal engagement of a licensed Portuguese fiscal representative on your behalf
- Preparation and issuance of the Power of Attorney (Procuração) required for remote applications
- Submission of your application to the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (Portuguese Tax Authority)
- Collection and delivery of your NIF certificate to your Carreh dashboard
- Basic guidance on how to read and use your NIF document
⚠️ Carreh's service is limited to the above. Ongoing fiscal representation, tax filing, accounting, or legal advisory services beyond the NIF application are not included and would require a separate engagement.
2Service Tiers & Fees
Carreh offers two service tiers. The applicable fee is determined at the time of application:
- Standard — €1,150: Estimated processing time of 2–10 working days from the date your signed Power of Attorney is received and verified by our legal team.
- Express — €1,450: Priority handling with an estimated processing time of 1–5 working days from the same reference point.
⚠️ Non-Refundable Policy
All service fees paid to Carreh are strictly non-refundable, regardless of the outcome of the application or any change in your personal circumstances. This applies without exception once payment has been received. By submitting your application and completing payment, you unconditionally waive any right to a refund.
Fees cover Carreh's operational costs, legal representation fees, and administrative costs associated with processing your application. They do not include any government fees, taxes, or levies that may be imposed by Portuguese authorities, though standard NIF applications for non-residents currently carry no government fee.
3Processing Timelines
All timelines stated are estimates based on typical processing times with the Portuguese Tax Authority. They are not guaranteed and may be extended due to circumstances entirely beyond Carreh's control, including but not limited to:
- Delays at the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT)
- Portuguese public holidays or administrative closures
- High application volumes at the Portuguese tax office
- Requests for additional documentation from Portuguese authorities
- Errors, discrepancies, or incomplete information in documents submitted by the client
- Delays in the client returning the signed Power of Attorney
🕐 The processing clock begins only once your signed Power of Attorney has been received, verified, and accepted by our legal team — not from the date of your application submission or payment.
Carreh will keep you informed of any material delays and will endeavour to resolve them as quickly as possible. Extended timelines do not constitute grounds for a refund or cancellation.
4Application Process
Your NIF application will follow these steps:
1
Application ReceivedCarreh receives your application form, personal details, and passport copy. Our team reviews the documents for completeness.
2
PaymentAn invoice is issued through your Carreh dashboard. Processing begins only after full payment is confirmed.
3
Power of AttorneyOur legal team sends you a Power of Attorney (Procuração) document to sign. This legally authorises our Portuguese lawyer to act as your fiscal representative before the AT. You must sign and return this document promptly — any delay will extend your processing time accordingly.
4
Verification & File CompilationOur lawyers verify the signed PoA and compile your complete application file for submission to the Autoridade Tributária.
5
Submission to Portuguese Tax AuthorityYour application is formally submitted by our Portuguese fiscal representative. The AT reviews and registers your NIF.
6
NIF Certificate Issued & DeliveredOnce your NIF is confirmed, your official certificate is uploaded to your Carreh dashboard for download. Carreh also provides a branded confirmation document.
5Client Responsibilities
You, the client, are solely responsible for:
- Providing accurate, complete, and truthful information in your application
- Uploading a valid, legible, and unexpired passport or national identity document
- Signing and returning the Power of Attorney promptly when requested
- Keeping your contact details and email address up to date in your Carreh account
- Informing Carreh immediately of any changes to your personal circumstances that may affect your application
⚠️ Accuracy of Information
Submitting false, misleading, or incomplete information — including use of a fraudulent identity document — constitutes a breach of these terms, may violate Portuguese law, and will result in immediate termination of your application without refund. Carreh reserves the right to report such conduct to the appropriate authorities.
6No Guarantee of Outcome
Carreh does not guarantee the issuance of a NIF in any specific timeframe, nor the acceptance of your application by the Portuguese Tax Authority. Decisions rest solely with the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira.
In the rare event that an application is rejected by the Portuguese authorities due to factors outside our control, Carreh will advise you on next steps. The service fee remains non-refundable in all circumstances.
7Fiscal Representative & NIF Scope
A Portuguese fiscal representative (representante fiscal) is legally required for non-residents applying for a NIF. Carreh appoints this representative on your behalf as part of the service. Please note:
- The fiscal representative is engaged solely for the purpose of obtaining your NIF
- Their appointment does not constitute ongoing tax or legal advice
- You will be notified of the representative's details as part of the process
- You may appoint your own fiscal representative after your NIF is issued
📋 Your NIF will initially be registered under Carreh's fiscal representative. Many clients choose to update their fiscal representative after receiving their NIF — for example, when they appoint a personal accountant. This is a simple process and our team can advise you.
8Finanças Portal Access
In some cases, Carreh may assist with requesting a temporary access password for the Portuguese Finanças online portal (Portal das Finanças). Where this is included:
- Passwords are typically dispatched by Portuguese authorities within 2–3 weeks of NIF registration
- Passwords are sent to the registered address of the fiscal representative, who will collect them in person on your behalf
- Carreh cannot guarantee or control the timeline for portal password issuance
Portal access assistance is provided as a courtesy where applicable and does not constitute a guaranteed deliverable.
9Confidentiality & Data Protection
All personal information submitted as part of your NIF application — including your passport, address, and date of birth — is handled in strict confidence and in accordance with applicable data protection law (GDPR).
- Your data is shared only with the legal professionals necessary to process your application
- Your data is not sold, rented, or shared with third parties for any other purpose
- Your documents are stored securely and accessible only to authorised Carreh personnel
10Limitation of Liability
Carreh's liability is strictly limited to the amount of the service fee paid. Carreh is not liable for any indirect, consequential, or incidental damages including but not limited to:
- Loss of business opportunities due to delayed NIF issuance
- Costs incurred as a result of delayed property purchase, lease, or banking arrangements
- Any penalties, fines, or legal consequences arising from the client's failure to comply with Portuguese tax obligations
- Any consequences arising from misuse of the NIF or Finanças portal credentials by the client
11Governing Law
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of France, where Carreh is based. Any disputes arising from or related to the services described herein shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Paris, France.
The underlying NIF application process is governed by Portuguese tax law (Código do Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Singulares and related AT regulations).
